Attractions and Places to Visit in Bangkok
Top Tourist Places in Bangkok
Bangkok, the vibrant capital and largest urban center of Thailand, is a city where ancient heritage blends seamlessly with modern energy. Known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon—the “City of Angels”—Bangkok began as a small trading post along the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It rose to prominence in 1768 when it was declared the capital of Siam after the fall of Ayutthaya. The Rattanakosin Kingdom began in 1782 when King Rama I moved the capital across the river, forming the historic district now known as Phra Nakhon, the cultural heart of modern Bangkok.
Throughout its history, Bangkok served as a strategic buffer between European colonial powers, helping the Thai kingdom maintain its independence. Over the past two centuries, the city has evolved into the political, cultural, and economic hub of Thailand and one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic destinations.
Top Attractions in Bangkok
1. The Grand Palace – Bangkok’s Most Iconic Landmark
A visit to the Grand Palace is one of the best things to do in Bangkok. Built more than 150 years ago, this magnificent complex remains the spiritual home of the Thai royal family. Visitors can explore two of its stunning throne halls, provided proper dress code is observed.
2. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha)
Located within the Grand Palace grounds, Wat Phra Kaew houses the revered 14th-century Emerald Buddha. This sacred statue was once enshrined at another major Bangkok temple, the riverside Wat Arun.
3. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)
One of Bangkok’s most photographed monuments, Wat Arun has stood since the era of King Taksin in the 18th century. Its striking central prang, built in the 1820s, rises 85 meters and was the tallest structure in Bangkok until the advent of modern skyscrapers.
4. Wat Suthat and the Giant Swing
Among Bangkok’s oldest temples, Wat Suthat is known for its impressive architecture and its location next to the Giant Swing—a towering teak structure once used in ancient Brahman ceremonies.
5. Wat Saket (Golden Mount)
The Golden Mount, or Phu Khao Thong, features a 58-meter chedi enshrining sacred Buddha relics. Constructed during the reign of King Rama I, it served as Bangkok’s main crematorium, especially during periods of plague when tens of thousands were laid to rest here.
